Intern Spotlight
Stephanie Tan
Summer 2016 Intern
Lowell
Class of 2019
How did you hear about Leadership?
I heard about Leadership from Enrichment Program Manager Connie Liu. She posted information about an internship opportunity on Lowell's Class of 2019 Facebook page. I was extremely interested in becoming an intern for Heart in Motion, so I decided to apply.
Why did you join leadership?
I believe I have the qualities to lead others and help make a difference in Heart in Motion. At the Escape from Alcatraz event, I helped ensure the integrity and honesty that this organization, Heart in Motion, represents and is known for.
What's one of your favorite memory from HIM?
My most recent volunteer engagement at the Bag Corral at the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon was my favorite memory from Heart in Motion. My group was tasked with sorting out bags that contained the possessions of the athletes, and organizing the Lost and Found area. I can never forget the satisfaction I saw whenever I retrieved an athlete's bags for them. Words of, "Wow! That was quick!" and "Thanks! I didn't even have to find my bag!" gave me a sense of community and happiness. By participating in volunteer acts such as this, I believe that we can all give back to the San Francisco community which has given us so much.
Why do you think you're chosen for this spotlight?
I was flattered to be chosen for this spotlight. It was a nice surprise, since I wasn't expecting it. I appreciate this recognition, and I believe what I did was in line with Heart in Motion's expectation for integrity.
What's your favorite hobby?
I enjoy taking part in the hobbies of reading, writing, drawing, watching anime, cosplaying, and playing JRPGs. Reading, writing, and drawing allow me to solely direct my concentration on a single thing, which in turn has been shown to increase happiness. As the president of the Anime Club at Lowell, it's pretty evident that I love Japanese culture. Anime and JRPGs are nice ways to pipe down and laugh a bit when you're feeling down or stressed. Cosplaying is a big thing for me. Dressing up and acting are parts of cosplay, which I enjoy very much.
