When did you start volunteering with Heart In Motion?
I started volunteering with Heart in Motion as a freshman. By then, I already had plans on joining Heart in Motion but I have not yet heard about the Leadership program. Angela asked me to join with her, so I joined without even knowing what it is. Since then, it's been one of the best choices I've made. My first event with Heart in Motion is the Giant Race in 2014 and I still remember how I felt like I was part of the team even though I was new to volunteering.
Why did you start volunteering with HIM?
I knew from middle school that I wanted to join a volunteering and service group in middle school. I heard from many upperclassmen friends good things about Heart in Motion so I gave it a try. My intentions of joining was originally to give back to the community and to meet new friends, but it's done so much more than that for me. Not only did I meet many of my close friends through HIM, I've went from being extremely shy to someone who's able to talk to everyone.
What is one of your favorite memories or events from HIM?
One of my favorite memories from HIM was Nike last year. It was the day before my birthday and my friends surprised with with a jar filled with notes for me, as well as a paper mache "B." This was a huge surprise to me because it's the first time that anyone's done something like that for me. Special thanks to everyone who was involved :)
What are your favorite hobbies?
I love drawing and painting during my free time. Going on hikes or walks on the beach are some things that I like to do to relax. Nature offers a kind of self-reflection that nothing else can give off. Of course, I also love volunteering and helping others out. I love making people laugh and cheering others up :)
What's your favorite part about volunteering with HIM?
My favorite part about volunteering with HIM is how everyone is very welcoming. The positive attitude from all the volunteers makes volunteering that much better. Seeing the smiles of our volunteers faces and runners and participants smiling back is really rewarding. Another thing that I love about volunteering with HIM is meeting new people. Because of HIM, I was able to meet people from schools other than Lowell. This allowed me to meet all kinds of people, many whom I can call my friends today. I can say for sure that I will not have met so many people during high school if I had not joined Heart in Motion.
